Join our team! We’re looking for a Community Cafe Host

Do you love people, tea, and cake? Educafe is looking for a Volunteer Community Cafe Host to help make our weekly Wednesday cafe the friendliest spot in town!

Each week at Newbury Library, our Community Cafe brings together over 100 local people to chat, connect, learn and belong. As Café Host, you’ll help create that warm, welcoming buzz, greeting visitors, helping set up and serve, supporting other volunteers and making sure everyone feels at home.

It’s a hands-on, heart-led role perfect for someone who enjoys community, conversation and being part of something that makes a real difference. All training and support are provided.

Role Description

Purpose of this role

To help make Educafe’s weekly Community Café a warm, welcoming place for everyone. You’ll be at the heart of the action – greeting visitors, supporting other volunteers, keeping the tea flowing and the cakes beautifully displayed.
It’s a lovely, sociable role that helps ensure our café runs smoothly and reflects Educafe’s mission of building a more connected and caring community.

What you’ll do

  • Welcome and host:
  • -Greet visitors with warmth and friendliness, remember names and even favourite drinks if you can.
  • -Help people feel at home and gently connect them with others.
  • -Create an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels they belong.
  • Support the Cafe Team:
  • – Help set up the café area (urn, cups, cakes, milk etc.) and make sure everything runs smoothly.
  • – Collaborate with our amazing team of café volunteers, share out tasks, encourage, and thank them for their help.
  • – Keep an eye on stock levels and let the team know when supplies need topping up.
  • – Ensure basic hygiene and safety standards are followed (training provided).
  • – Work alongside our Operations Manager and Volunteer Manager who will support you in your role

Person specification

  • Skills and experience
  • – Friendly, organised and a natural team player.
  • – Confident chatting with people from all walks of life.
  • – Some experience in hospitality or community events is helpful, but not essential.
  • Personal qualities
  • – Warm, kind and calm, especially when it gets busy!
  • – A good listener who enjoys helping others feel comfortable.
  • – Flexible and happy to learn new things.
  • – Committed to Educafe’s values of connection, kindness and inclusion.
  • Training and checks
  • – Food Hygiene Level 1 – Educafe will arrange this for you.
  • – Enhanced DBS – Educafe will apply for you.
