Case Study: From Learners to Business Owners

Carola & Jose's story reveals how Educafe acts as a lifeline to empower new arrivals to re-settle, feel welcomed and thrive

Carola and Jose arrived from Brazil in West Berkshire as new residents and, like many, faced the challenge of adapting to life in a new country. One of their biggest hurdles was learning English, a crucial skill for integrating into their community and achieving their dreams.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE

Carola discovered Educafe through a Facebook post advertising an English course for beginners. Intrigued but uncertain, she reached out via email and was met with kindness and encouragement from Clare, an Educafe team member. With support from Educafe, Carola and Jose not only improved their English but also formed friendships and connections that eased their transition into the UK. Educafe became their lifeline.

SIGNPOSTING & COMMUNITY NAVIGATION

While taking the course, Carola shared her dreams of starting a small business. Despite her nerves and language barriers, the Educafe team stepped up to help. They introduced Carola and Jose to the Hungerford Artisan Market, where they have now been successful members for over three years. Through this community, they’ve built their local business, Zanardo’s, and become part of a supportive network of entrepreneurs.

GIVING BACK TO THEIR COMMUNITY

Carola and Jose’s story highlights the transformative power of language education and community support. By overcoming the language barrier, they were able to build a successful business and give back to the very community that welcomed them. Today, they support Educafe’s community café by contributing baked goods regularly as part of the Bake A Difference programme. We’re grateful to Jose and Carola for continuing the cycle of encouragement and growth that helped them flourish.

Carola reflects proudly on her journey, saying, “Educafe is a big family, ready to welcome everyone! It’s a beautiful project, and I feel very proud to be part of this story.”

Carola and Jose’s experience demonstrates how English language support and education can empower new arrivals to re-settle, feel welcomed and thrive. Their success is not only a personal achievement but also a testament to the impact of community-driven and person-centred initiatives like Educafe.
