Since January, an ESOL group of Afghan, Turkish, Bangladeshi, Arabian and Syrian women has been meeting every week at Educafe. Together, they’ve progressed rapidly in their English acquisition and have done this through the constant support, encouragement and humour that they’ve shown toward each other. They’ve become firm friends who clearly love learning.
It’s not just about learning a language
We’ve not only been learning English, but we’ve also been looking at aspects of British culture, high days and holidays, and insights into their own cultures – often accompanied by peels of laughter.
This extraordinary group was recognised recently at the West Berkshire Learner Achievement Awards where we won in the group category.
The Event
The ladies who attended the ceremony all turned up looking amazing, and all of them chatted to the leader of the council and other prominent members of the community. I might be biased, but I think we were the happiest group there.
Well done ladies!! – and not to forget Ellen who has also taught them occasionally and who came to the ceremony with us.
