Educafe’s Impact Intern, Daisy Stratton, explains how Chatty Corner does more than just help people improve their English language.
Background
Educafe’s Chatty Corner supports individuals from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds, many of whom are of working age and have experienced social isolation after arriving in the UK. Attendees include individuals from Asian, Afghan, and Ukrainian communities who often face barriers linked to language, confidence, unfamiliarity with local services, and difficulties understanding and navigating a new culture and community.
Before attending Educafe, many participants reported struggling to communicate in English and feeling unable to fully express themselves in everyday situations. This often led to reduced confidence, loneliness, and barriers to employment and community participation.
One participant, M, who moved to the UK from Kharkiv, Ukraine, reflected many of these experiences. In Ukraine, M taught art and had a background in architecture, but after arriving in the UK they struggled with confidence due to the language barrier and found it difficult to build social connections. M described wanting to feel useful and part of the community but feeling too isolated to do so.
Pathway to Educafe
Many attendees discovered Educafe and Chatty Corner through local networks, community recommendations, and word of mouth. The welcoming and informal atmosphere attracted people who wanted a safe and accessible place to practise English and develop meaningful social connections.
M was referred to Educafe through Job Centre Plus and initially attended Chatty Corner to improve their English, build confidence in everyday communication, and meet new people.
Experience at Educafe
Participants consistently described Educafe as a friendly, supportive, and non-judgemental environment where they could practise conversational English in a relaxed setting. The informal nature of the sessions enables participants to build confidence gradually through conversation, peer support, and regular social interaction. One attendee described it as “a very friendly and cosy place to learn and meet new people.”
Many attendees also engaged with other areas of Educafe, including the café space and Parents’ Village activities which created further opportunities to develop skills, relationships and community involvement. Over time, some individuals progressed from attending sessions to volunteering within the organisation.
For M, Chatty Corner became an important stepping stone towards greater confidence and involvement in the community. Through regular conversations with visitors and volunteers, M gradually became more comfortable speaking English, this led to M then being a volunteer in the café area. Here, M prepares drinks, serves food and supports other visitors.
Impact and Outcomes
Attendance at Chatty Corner led to clear improvements in participants’ confidence and conversational English skills. With findings highlighting that 82% of participants reported improved confidence and 85% reporting improved wellbeing because of attending Educafe as seen in the community survey. Many attendees reported feeling more able to explain themselves, communicate with others, and navigate daily life in the UK.
Alongside language development, participants experienced increased social connection and reduced loneliness. Educafe became more than just a place to practise English; it became a safe and welcoming community space where individuals felt accepted, valued, and supported. One attendee described it as “a very friendly and cosy place to learn and meet new people”, while another reflected, “I feel more confident. It is helpful, the environment is peaceful and nice.”
Survey findings also suggest that Chatty Corner supports wider integration into community life. Nearly three-quarters of respondents (74%) reported feeling more familiar with UK culture, while 69% felt more aware of local services and support available to them. In addition, 72% reported gaining new skills through their involvement with Educafe. These findings demonstrate that Educafe provides more than language support; it helps individuals develop the confidence, knowledge and resilience needed to feel more purposeful in life.
For M, the impact was significant. Before attending Educafe, M felt nervous speaking even a small amount of English. Through attending Chatty Corner and volunteering in the café, M became more confident communicating with others and working as part of a team. M now feels comfortable speaking with visitors, even when making occasional mistakes.
M also described the emotional importance of the space, explaining that they now look forward to Wednesdays because they can see friends, feel supported, and feel needed. Volunteering has given M a renewed sense of purpose and belonging within the local community. Their experience reflects wider survey findings, with almost 70% of respondents reporting that Educafe had helped give them a greater sense of purpose.
Educafe has become more than just a place to practise English; it has become a safe and welcoming community space where individuals feel accepted, valued and supported. Participants repeatedly described the organisation as friendly, inclusive and community-focused. One respondent commented that Educafe is “important to the community and builds community,” while another simply stated, “I feel happy and it’s very friendly.”
For many attendees, including M, Educafe has become a place where friendships are formed, confidence is developed and opportunities are created. Through informal conversation, volunteering opportunities and supportive relationships, Chatty Corner helps individuals move from isolation towards confidence, connection and active participation in community life.
What Made the Difference
A key factor highlighted by attendees was the support and kindness shown by Educafe volunteers and staff. Participants described the environment as welcoming, inclusive, and encouraging, which helped build trust and confidence over time.
M particularly wanted to thank the volunteers who dedicate their time to helping others feel more confident and happier while adapting to life in the UK as well as Ellen, Margaret, Paul and Wendy – their support helped M feel able to settle into the community and take positive steps forward.
Longer-term Reflection
Educafe demonstrates the value of providing more than just language support sessions. Through safe social spaces, informal conversation, and opportunities for involvement, Chatty Corner helps individuals move from isolation towards confidence, connection, and active participation in their community.
For many attendees, including M, Educafe has become a place where they not only improve their English, but also develop friendships, confidence, awareness of opportunities, and a stronger sense of belonging.
Reflecting on their experience, M encouraged others who may feel nervous about attending to “come and not be afraid,” describing Educafe as “a new step towards building a fulfilling life in the UK.”
Wider Public Health Impact
Educafe demonstrates how community-based interventions can address wider determinants of health by reducing social isolation, strengthening social networks, increasing confidence, and supporting integration into community life. By providing opportunities for social connection, volunteering and skill development, Chatty Corner contributes to improved wellbeing of individuals and community cohesion.
Educafe highlights the importance of creating inclusive spaces where individuals can build both practical skills and social capital. For many participants, the benefits extend beyond language acquisition to include improved mental wellbeing, increased confidence, greater community participation, and enhanced opportunities for future employment or volunteering.
