Educafe

Director’s Message – Summer 2026

As we reach the end of another busy Educafe year, we are also preparing to celebrate a very special milestone: Educafe’s 5th birthday.

Five years ago, Educafe began as a simple idea,  to create a warm, welcoming place where people could come together, make friends, practise English, share food, find support and feel part of something. Since then, that idea has grown into a vibrant weekly community, a trusted local network, and now a model that others are beginning to learn from and adapt.

We have come a long way.

This year has been one of growth, consolidation and new beginnings. Our Wednesday community café at Newbury Library remains the beating heart of Educafe, a place of tea, cake, conversation, laughter, support and belonging. Week after week, our volunteers, visitors, learners, parents, partners and friends help create something that feels increasingly rare and precious: a genuinely inclusive community space where everyone is welcome.

There is so much to celebrate.

Our Chatty Corner continues to thrive, supporting people from many different countries and backgrounds to practise English, build confidence and feel at home in Newbury. Our Education Hub has continued to develop, creating clearer pathways from informal conversation into structured learning, work confidence and accredited English language support. Our Parent Village has once again shown how vital it is for families with young children to have somewhere kind, relaxed and supportive to go. Our Knit & Natter, seated wellbeing and creative activities remind us that connection can happen in so many gentle and powerful ways.

We have also seen our volunteers shine. Educafe simply would not exist without the people who turn up, week after week, with kindness, patience, humour and commitment. Our recent volunteer feedback confirmed what we see every Wednesday: that volunteering at Educafe is not only about giving, but also about connection, confidence, friendship and purpose. We are deeply grateful to every person who gives their time, skills and heart to this community.

This year has also marked an important step forward for Educafe as an organisation. Thanks to the support of The National Lottery Community Fund, we have been able to build more stability around our core work, invest in our team, strengthen our systems and begin sharing what we have learned more widely. The launch of our Togetherness Project, podcast, toolkit and Community of Practice reflects something we feel strongly: that the Educafe model has something valuable to offer beyond Newbury.

One of the most exciting examples of this is  Moonrakers’ Educafe, our first pilot space in Wiltshire. Seeing the Educafe spirit begin to take root in another community has been both moving and encouraging. It reminds us that small acts of welcome, a smile, a conversation, a cup of tea, an invitation to join in can make a powerful difference wherever they happen.

As we celebrate five years, we also want to be honest: there is still more to do.

The need for connection, language support, family support, wellbeing activities and trusted community spaces has not gone away. In many ways, it is growing. We know that many people are still lonely, isolated, overwhelmed, newly arrived, unsure where to turn, or simply in need of somewhere they feel seen and valued. Educafe exists for those moments.

So this birthday is not just a celebration of what has been achieved. It is also a recommitment to what comes next.

To our volunteers, visitors, learners, families, partners, funders, donors, local businesses and friends, thank you. Thank you for believing in Educafe, for showing up, for spreading the word, for sharing your stories, for offering practical help, and for making this community what it is.

Five years in, Educafe is still growing, still learning and still powered by the same simple belief we started with: that strong, happy and healthy communities are built when people feel welcome, supported and connected.

Here’s to five years of Educafe and to the next chapter of kindness, togetherness and belonging.

With warmth and gratitude,
Clare Middleton & Janine Ford
