The support flowing from our area to Ukraine has been heartwarming. The Ukranian flag is being flown at Newbury Town Hall and in the Wantage marketplace, and Swindon’s Greenbridge roundabout is lit in Ukraine’s blue and yellow colours. There will be a Candlelit Vigil in Newbury Marketplace at 6.30pm this Friday 4 March.
There have been donations of supplies to be transported to the war zone and lots of appeals for financial aid. Here is our summary so far of how you can help. Please comment below with more appeals to add to the list.
Appeals you can support
- The Ukraine Institute in London recommends these Ukrainian causes to support including humanitarian aid, media and military.
- Hopes and Homes for Children is asking for donations to support the 100,000 children in 600 of Ukraine’s orphanages, who are the unseen victims of the conflict, many left to face the dangers of war alone.
- Disaster Emergency Committee: Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal
- Pip and Caragh from Axford has launched an justgiving appeal to help a small Polish village near the Ukraine border which has received 500 women and children refugees and is running out of supplies. You can also drop off supplies at Aldbourne Post Office & Stores eg power generators, sleeping bags, first aid kit, medicines for kids (ibuprofen, cough syrup), torches with batteries, long term food, fire equipment, helmets, medical supplies.
- Bus driver Simon Ellis from Pewsey is flying to Krakow in Poland, hiring transport and delivering urgent medical supplies and food to the border with Ukraine. He is also sending money for clothing and portable mobile phone chargers as refugees are cold and desperate to communicate with their families when they cross into Poland. Please support his appeal here.
- The Polish Community Centre in Swindon has been overwhelmed by the response but is no longer accepting donations themselves. See here for other drop-off places in Swindon. They have a new dedicated bank account for BACS donations to help finance the aid for Ukraine and will cover the operational costs of their aid action: Educational and Cultural Centre, Swindon CIO (reg. charity number 1183960),;Sort code 20-68-15; Account number 73070557 ;Reference: UKRAINE
