Step Into Work – Newbury: Helping People Find Their Voice, Confidence and Career

The Problem We’re Solving

Every week at Educafe, we meet dozens of individuals from refugee and migrant backgrounds who are ready and eager to work. They bring with them a wealth of experience — in healthcare, engineering, construction, hospitality and more.

What’s holding them back? Just one thing: language.

Despite their drive and ability, many can’t access meaningful work because they lack the English skills and UK workplace experience employers look for.

While there are excellent informal sessions and community support (including our own weekly language café), the formal learning provision in West Berkshire is limited and underfunded, often offering just 2 hours a week.

We believe Newbury can do better — and lead the way.

Our Solution: A Pathway to Possibility

Step Into Work – Newbury is a 16-week programme that combines:
– Intensive English for Work lessons
– Job coaching, CV writing and interview practice
– A nationally recognised qualification (LASER Entry Level in Employability)
– A 1-month supported work placement with a local business

It’s everything someone needs to not only apply for work, but to succeed in it — with confidence and community behind them.

We Need Local Businesses to Join Us

This initiative is only possible with the support of Newbury and Thatcham’s business community. You can be part of it in four simple ways:

✅ Host a placement – Offer a 4-week trial work experience to one learner
✅ Be a guest speaker – Inspire participants with a 1-hour talk or Q&A
✅ Offer in-kind support – Donate meeting space, printing or equipment
✅ Sponsor a learner – £775 covers a full 16-week journey for one person

Whether you run a café, hotel, construction firm, logistics hub, or care home — you could be the bridge to a better life for someone living right here in our community.

Why it works?

Language is best learned in real life. Just as children learn English by being immersed in school, adults learn fastest on the job — where context, routine, and real communication accelerate progress.

With structured support from Educafe, volunteer mentors, and employers, we’ve seen time and time again that people not only learn — they flourish.

This is more than a course. It’s a confidence-builder, a connection-maker, and a stepping stone into independence.

Join the movement

We’re calling on businesses in Newbury, Thatcham and across West Berkshire to step forward and say:
“Yes, we believe in opportunity. Yes, we’re proud to support local talent.”

Together, we can create a community that’s more connected, more compassionate, and more economically resilient.
