Director’s Update: Spring 2026

We hope you had a wonderful Easter break! We are refreshed and ready to see you all again at Newbury Library on Wednesday, April 15th.

As you’ll notice, we’ve updated the format of our newsletter. At Educafe, we are constantly learning and adapting to better serve you. This new look is the result of some trial and error, designed to be clearer for our readers while remaining cost-efficient and sustainable. By keeping our overheads low, we ensure more of our resources go exactly where they belong: back into the community.

A Year of Growth & Momentum

We are officially celebrating the first anniversary of our game-changing five-year National Lottery Reaching Communities award. For the first time, our core Newbury Library project is on a firm financial footing, allowing us to dream bigger.
Momentum is building across several exciting fronts:

 – The Moonraker Project: We are thrilled to be collaborating with the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre on this initiative, bridging heritage and community in innovative ways.
– Digital Innovation: Behind the scenes, we are currently developing a dedicated Educafe app to make accessing our services and schedules easier than ever.

 – Measuring What Matters: We’ve recruited a volunteer “Impact Team” to lead our data collection and evaluation. Five years into our journey, a powerful picture is emerging. By documenting the “difference” we make, we can better tell the story of Educafe’s value to funders and partners alike.

Small Stories, Big Impact

When we look at the data, the true magic of Educafe is found in the individual connections. Our recent successes include:
 – Stronger Pathways: Our partnership with Home-Start has created a direct, accessible referral route for new parents seeking support.
 – The “Partner Village”:  Our unique approach allows local services to meet our visitors face-to-face, providing vital signposting and information in a relaxed setting.
 – Collaborative Spirit: Our Friends of Educafe and Changemaker programs continue to provide a cooperative way for local people to navigate and promote community resources.

We are Community Conservationists

We’ve come to realise that we are more than just a cafe, we are “community conservationists”. We nurture, protect and enrich our local area by bringing people together. Think of it as a social ecosystem: over the last five years, we’ve grown the “roots, shoots, and leaves” of a resilient network of volunteers, partners and friendships.

Educafe isn’t for just one group; it is for everyone who wishes to participate.
This strength ripples outward into the wider local economy. By supporting sole traders, new businesses, and fellow non-profits, we contribute to what West Berkshire Council’s Mark Brown calls the “Pound Plus” effect, the idea that a connected community hub generates value far beyond its initial investment. You can hear more about this in our Creating Communities podcast episode.

Looking Ahead

Thanks to the National Lottery, we are now looking beyond West Berkshire to share our message: with the right approach and a spirit of cooperation, community wellbeing can thrive, and when it does, our health, local authority and economic systems all win.

To our volunteers, funders, partners, Friends, and Changemakers, Thank you for being part of this journey. We can’t wait to see what we grow together next.
