Let’s Get Active Fund supports Educafe Free Fitness Classes

As part of the District’s recovery from Covid-19, West Berkshire Council partnered with Greenham Trust to create the Let’s Get Active Fund (LGAF), creating a £33,660.00 fund to improve access to physical activities in West Berkshire, via proposals developed and organised by local community groups.

So far, money from the LGAF has been spent on a number of exciting projects including: a new ‘Donnington Castle’ play structure for Shaw-cum-Donnington Parish Council, two football/rugby hybrid nets and a permanent wheelchair-accessible table tennis table for East Ilsley Parish Council, and a new Reading Rockets community basketball hub for children based in West Berkshire.

The latest project which the LGAF has helped to fund is a ten week programme of free activities run by Educafe Community Cafe in Newbury.

The LGAF has contributed the cost of the chair yoga classes in this timetable, which will be running every Wednesday at The Globe Indoor Garden from 2.15pm to 3pm.

There will also be a Women’s Workout every Tuesday at the Waterside Centre in Newbury, with Parents and Babies fitness on Fridays.

Graham Bridgman, West Berkshire’s Executive Member for Health and wellbeing said:

“This project achieves exactly what LGAF was created to do – there’s something for everyone within the programme. Educafe have ensured that the activities are accessible and inclusive, and we want as many people as possible to enjoy the classes and the social benefits that the Educafe programme offers.

“We still have money in the LGAF pot – if you are a community group with an activity idea that needs funding, please apply now.”

Educafe project coordinator Janine Ford said,

“I hope this Educafe Gets Active project is just the start of more to come for local residents. We want to offer affordable ways to socialise and move more. This isn’t about getting a six pack, it’s about bringing people together to do stuff which is good for us… moving, stretching, having fun and being together. Now more than ever, we need to re-stitch our community and focus on our health and wellbeing”

The Educafe programme starts on Tuesday 12th October and will run for ten weeks.
