At Educafe, we’ve spent the past four years doing something simple—but radical: creating a space where people feel welcome, seen, and supported. Week after week, our community café opens its doors to over 150 visitors from all walks of life. Our Parents Village connects with over 600 families, and our social platforms reach thousands more. We didn’t build this overnight. It’s taken time, care, listening, and trust.
That’s why we’re rethinking what collaboration really means in the charity and community space.
The Challenge: Why Should One Group Carry the Weight?
We’re often approached by charities and community groups who want to engage with the diverse, multilingual, and often marginalised communities we serve. And we’re glad—they are exactly the kind of people who deserve access to support, resources, and opportunities.
But too often, this outreach comes with an assumption: that Educafe will provide that access freely, with no recognition of what it costs us to keep our space open, consistent, and trusted.
It’s time to ask: why is it considered normal for one organisation to carry the full weight of building and maintaining community access—while others benefit without investing in it?
Our Solution: A Fairer, Sustainable Model of Partnership
To address this, we created the Change Maker Programme and Friends of Educafe Scheme—a simple, ethical framework for partnership that ensures mutual benefit.
- You (a charity, service provider, or community group) get access to a vibrant, diverse, and engaged audience that aligns with your mission.
- We ask for a small contribution—financial or in-kind—that supports the space you want to connect through.
This is not about monetising relationships. It’s about sustaining the community platform that makes those relationships possible.
Is This Innovative? Absolutely. And It’s Fair.
We’re not alone in this thinking. Across the UK and globally, organisations like The Advocacy Academy, May Project Gardens, and The Social Change Agency are shifting towards ethical collaboration models. These groups recognise that when you access a trusted community, you’re stepping into a space that took years to build—and that support must go both ways.
