Chatty corner: creating belonging through conversation
This case study explores how Chatty Corner offers far more than language practice. Daisy highlights how people arriving from countries including Ukraine, Afghanistan and across Asia find confidence, friendship and a sense of belonging through relaxed conversation and gentle support. The story of M shows how a welcoming space can help someone move from isolation towards purpose, volunteering and community connection. Survey findings reveal clear improvements in confidence, wellbeing and cultural understanding, showing the wider public health value of inclusive social spaces.
Parent village: from isolation to confidence and community
In this powerful case study, Daisy explores how Parent Village supports families who often arrive feeling isolated, unsure where to turn and in need of connection during early parenthood. Through weekly sessions, gentle conversation and a welcoming atmosphere, parents build friendships, confidence and a sense of belonging. Survey findings show clear improvements in wellbeing, awareness of local services and social connection, with many describing Parent Village as a lifeline during a challenging stage of life.
The partnership with Home‑Start West Berkshire has strengthened support further, ensuring families can access trusted volunteers without long waiting lists. Parent Village has become a place where parents feel listened to, valued and part of a community that continues beyond the weekly sessions.
A gentle appeal: help keep parent village running
Funding for Parent Village ends this December. This space has become vital for families who rely on it for connection, confidence and community support. We would love for local businesses and community members to step forward and sponsor a term so families can continue accessing this much‑needed support.

We are delighted that funding has been granted to continue Educafe’s English language, employment and resettlement programmes into the new academic year.
With huge thanks to West Berkshire Council Adult Community Learning and the West Berkshire Council Migration Team, we are ready to welcome returning learners and newcomers to our supportive, immersive courses.
At Educafe, learning English is about much more than the classroom. Our Learner Journey begins with a warm welcome, conversation and connection, often through Chatty Corner, the Community Café or Parents’ Village. Learners can then register, meet our Education Hub team, join the right course for their level and progress towards greater confidence, independence, further learning, volunteering or employment.
Start at Chatty Corner
All learners are warmly invited to practise English, meet new people and build confidence at Chatty Corner, reopening on Wednesday 9 September 2026 at Newbury Library, 11.00am–2.00pm during term time.
Courses for 2026–2027
- – Beginners ESOL – face-to-face in Newbury, for learners starting their English journey
- – Improvers ESOL – face-to-face in Newbury, for learners ready to build confidence and accuracy
- – Upper Intermediate ESOL – online, for learners developing fluency for work, education and everyday life
- – Advanced ESOL – online, for confident learners progressing towards professional work or higher-level study
- – Job Support Club: English for Work – face-to-face in Newbury, combining workplace English with CV, application, interview and job-search support
Face-to-face ESOL courses carry a £150 registration and resources fee for the academic year. Days and times will be confirmed in the course information.

5 - year impact report
Educafe’s five‑year impact report celebrates how a simple idea grew into a resilient community ecosystem built on connection, collaboration and shared purpose. The report brings together stories, evidence and reflections that show how relationships have shaped our work, strengthened wellbeing and supported people across West Berkshire to thrive. It highlights key milestones, the power of togetherness and the practical resources that have helped learning travel far beyond our weekly events.
This milestone report is both a celebration and a statement of intent for the future, showing what we have achieved together and how we plan to continue supporting communities with meaningful, measurable impact.
Our 5th birthday: a snapshot of celebration and collaboration
We marked our fifth birthday with a joyful gathering at Newbury Library where more than 200 people joined us for music, cake and community connection. Partners, volunteers and friends came together to celebrate everything Educafe has grown into over the past five years. It was a simple but heartfelt reminder of the strength of our community and the impact we have created together.
